New York est une métropole fascinante. Son agglomération est la plus importante des Etats-Unis, devant celle de Los Angeles. Avec sa population de 8,1 millions d’habitants, elle n’en finit pas de croître. Son dynamisme économique et culturel fascine autant que ses buildings. Mais, une vie à part, alternative et misérable, se développe dans les entrailles de New York. En effet, une population de sans abris échappant à tout contrôle des autorités, occupe les sous-sols du centre. Parfois, depuis plusieurs générations, des personnes mènent une vie singulière, dans les vastes conduits qui serpentent sous la ville.

 

This is a journey to another New York. Under the city there are 18 levels below ground and 468 open or abandoned subway stations, a maze of corridors, and kilometres of disused tunnels.
Women and men take shelter here, in the bowels of the city; they dodge in and out; they crawl there; they survive there.
To meet this people of darkness, you have to take forgotten stairways, lift grids and hatches, slide down into holes, merge into the gloom. And then you have to go down.
It is not known how many people live here, masked by the city. They escape from daylight just as they elude statistics; no-one ever goes to meet them.
Chantal Lasbats spent a year meeting them. She succeeded in gaining the confidence of "the people below", who have in some cases been living underground for 30 years, but are relentlessly pursued by the police: lives of darkness in the kingdom of exclusion.
For "the people above", they are the stuff of legend and are nicknamed the "mole people": they are the wretched refuse of the American dream.

نيويورك مدينة فاتنة، وعدد سكانها هو الأهم في الولايات المتحدة، 8.1 مليون، وهي لا تكف عن الامتداد. حركيتها الاقتصادية والثقافية تجلب الانتباه مثل بناءاتها... لكن حياة بائسة تتنامى في أحشائها: مجموعة من المتشردين لا سيطرة للسلطات عليهم تحتل العالم السفلي تحت الأرض، وأحيانا يعيش بعضهم من جيل إلى جيل حياة غريبة في المجاري الشاسعة التي تلتف مثل الثعبان تحت المدينة.
